⏱ Why Wait? | Weekly Wharmby #58

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now.

Hello,

As crazy as it seems, 2023 is just under 6 weeks away. As we fly towards Christmas, we tend to put off things until the New Year but today’s email is simple: why wait?

📆 Why wait for the New Year?

Here’s a great illustration I saw on Instagram by @wisdommadeeasy.

It sums up why we should start that thing now, rather than put it off until 1st Jan (which, in reality, is no different to any other day of the year).

Get ahead by starting now.

We are always looking for a reason to put something off, but why wait?

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The next best time is now. (Chinese proverb)

Sidenote: you can get away with writing anything if you add (Chinese proverb) at the end.

Your neighbour’s pond will never have sharks. (Chinese proverb)

Anyway - it’s easy to underestimate the changes we can make in just 6 weeks.

But more importantly, by starting now, we’ll be 6 weeks ahead by January 1st.

Put it this way: when that holiday / race / job interview is just around the corner, you’ll be glad you started now and gave yourself 6 extra weeks.

What’s stopping you from starting today?

This week: ⬇️

📖 I’m starting to read How to be Confident by James Smith - big fan of his general views about fitness and life as a whole and have already read two of his previous books. Will report back. I have also just finished A Game of Thrones which was even better than I remember, can’t wait for A Clash of Kings.

📺 I finished watching the last series of Stranger Things on Netflix - great series overall but the final 2.5 hour episode was a long one

⚽️ I’m currently watching the World Cup of course - 4 games a week! What a dream and what a start for England

🎙 I’m planning a podcast/video idea thing where I try something for 30 days, guinea pig style, and report back my findings. Things like daily journalling / yoga / speaking to a friend or relative on the phone every day / daily running etc. I want to look at the most commonly recommended daily habits, why they are recommended so often and what I should expect. Perhaps the first section will be talking about the last month and what I’ve learned and what I’ll keep, and the second section can be what’s coming up next month. Let’s see. There’s so much advice available that I think what we all really need is someone to distill the best bits and share what’s really worth trying. And no, I won’t be doing daily cold showers 🥶

💬 And finally, a quote

I think this is really cool - Leigh Gallagher, the writer of 📖 The Airbnb Story, describing Airbnb founder Brian Chesky:

The most consistent observation from those who know Chesky is that he possesses this extreme level of curiosity, and what could be described as an obsession with constantly absorbing new information.
