✅ Never miss a Monday | #AWIP 71

A simple action that we always do can set us up for a great morning, day, even week.

Today’s a straightforward one from my own personal experience.

A simple action that we always do can set us up for a great morning, day, even week.

It’s a thing I’ve been calling Never Miss A Monday. It’s not a new thing, plenty of people have said those words before, but it’s relatively new for me.

NMAM is the unbreakable habit that I always go to the gym on a Monday, regardless of what I’m doing. I have to find a way to make sure that I go on a Monday.

Here’s the science:

I aim to go to the gym 4 times per week, usually Monday / Tuesday / Thursday and any day Fri-Sun.

If I’ve not been on Monday I can blink and, before I know it, it’s Friday and I still need to fit in 2-3 sessions.

The first part of why NMAM is so effective is that it forces me to get in a session early in the week, so it isn’t left for a later day.

But the second, harder to spot part of this, is that going on a Monday sets up the week.

I gymmed on Monday, so I’m going to keep up the momentum and stick to my schedule. = 4 sessions done.

vs

It’s Friday, I’ve only got 1 session in so far, I have a really busy weekend, I’ll just wait until Monday and start again. = 1 session done.

A simple habit that really does have a huge positive effect.

It goes without saying that, while I use NMAM for my gym routine, it can be used for absolutely anything:

  • Waking up at 5AM on Monday to get ahead of the week

  • Starting your weekly yoga routine

  • Getting that first run of the week in

Getting it done on a Monday massively takes the pressure off for the rest of the week, so you can be flexible for whatever comes.

And this gives us momentum to continue through the week in a positive and productive way.

This week I'm: ⬇️

📺 Watching Peep show after many a recommendation. It’s weird and quite depressing but also very funny which is, essentially, life as a Brit

🎧 Listening to my new favourite author - Micheal Pollan - recounting the process of designing and building his own writing house at the end of his garden.

🕺🏻 Also listening to Radio 1 Dance Party on BBC Sounds - lots of good new music and a great accompaniment when driving to an early morning start

📱 Interested in this news publisher - Ground - that provides both sides of the political spectrum for a particular story. It also has a feature that specifically shows you news you may have missed due to your political leaning. Amazing idea

☀️ Happy that this week is the first week we have sunrise before 7AM and sunset after 5.30AM - spring is around the corner 😎

🏃🏻‍♂️ Getting back into running - expect to hear about that in the weeks to come

🥾 Planning a 5 day hiking trip along Britain’s oldest road, the Ridgeway National Trail, in September - inspired by Liam Brown’s trip. Fingers crossed for no rain

📹 Recommending you watch this video about how aircraft carriers work (by the 🐐 Wendover Productions). Random but great, who knew the fighter jets were caught by a huge elastic band thing when they landed on the aircraft carrier??

💬 And finally, a quote

‘Never miss twice.’ James Clear argues that missing a habit once isn’t the end of the world and doesn’t affect what you do in the long term. The trick is to immediately get back on track.
