38 | 🚶🏻Best of 2021 Weekly Wharmby

Hi,

Today’s email will be my 38th (wow), and given it’s also the end of the year, now’s as good a time as any to go back through and pick out some of the best ones.

Also, a quick reminder - to myself at the very least - why I write and share this email.

It’s a great way to consolidate things I’ve enjoyed or learned over the past week. Kind of like a public diary, but hopefully a bit more useful.

I write these as a guide, definitely not a guru - I am learning as I go along and I think it’s useful to share.

Share what you love, and the people who love the same things will find you. — Austin Kleon

✅ My favourite Weekly Wharmbys from 2021

  1. 08 | 🗺 Journey before destination - It’s important to enjoy the journey (or process), such as running (journey) in order to lose 5kg (goal), or a weekly language lesson (journey) to learn a 2nd language (goal). If you don’t enjoy the route to your goal, you probably won’t get there.

  2. 014 | 📉 Overcoming 'The Dip’ - New things, like playing squash for the first time or learning to code, are fun when you start because they’re new and novel. Then they get hard, and the fun disappears: welcome to the Dip. Pushing through is the 🔑

  3. 18 | ❌ Motivation is bullsh*t - We wait around for motivation to strike and push us into action. The thing is, motivation is a rarity at best: discipline and good habits are what guide us into getting stuff done.

  4. 20 | 🛌 3 simple steps for better sleep - If sleep was a drug, it would be the most prescribed drug on Earth. More quality sleep = better life.

  5. 24 | 🌴 Picking the low-hanging fruit of self-improvement - Not the catchiest of titles but it gets the job done.

  6. 25 | 📜 Curating our content feeds - What we see online is (mostly) our choice, but we are usually in scroll mode rather than ‘curation’ mode (e.g. unfollow mode). This is something i’ve thought about a lot, so it was good to put it down into words.

  7. 28 | 🙍🏻‍♂️ Stop choosing to be unhappy - In my opinion, watching the news has no benefit and only serves to make us unhappy. Avoid ❌.

  8. 30 | 📧 For those who hate email... - Simple ways to take control of your email

  9. 32 | 🤲🏻 Gratitude (and expressing more of it) - Of everything I’ve written this year, this post got the most positive reaction.

  10. 034 | 🐸 Eat your frogs - Simple and effective mantra to stop putting things off.

Happy New Year!

Thanks! 😎
