10 | ✋🏻 My 5 best habits

Yo team - this has been a crazy week so this weeks newsletter is a summary of my most recent video (I recommend you watch it! Link at the end of the email). Don’t forget to subscribe!

As I’ve mentioned before, I’m a big fan of small changes that make a big difference, and there’s 5 have had a huge positive impact on:

  • My sleep

  • My health

  • My happiness

  • Even my productivity with work

The best bit about [most of] these is that they require very minimal effort and can be done in less than a minute - maybe even ten seconds.

🍽 1 - Don’t Use Knife and Fork Whilst Chewing

For most of my teenage years I ate way too quickly and would often be the first person to finish.

Finishing your food first is rubbish because you have to sit there and watch everyone else enjoy theirs.

And it often meant I'd feel really full and shitty because I didn't give my body enough time to digest.

Not using my knife and fork whilst I’m chewing is a great way to force myself eat a bit more mindfully.

This way, I’m concentrating on what I’m currently eating rather than moving onto the next bit.

And it's so easy to do! I enjoy my food more, and I don't finish eating as quickly. Win win.

📱 Number 2 - Don’t Leave Mobile Phone By the Bed Before Sleep

I've mentioned this one before in my video on How to sleep better - but it's worth repeating.

Leaving my phone on the side before bed completely eliminates all phone time in bed.

So no Instagram when I should be reading or sleeping, and no hitting the snooze button and going back to sleep.

Once again - win win.

👕 Number 3 - Fold Up Workout Gear Ready On Side Before Bed

Sometimes, I don’t want to get out of bed and exercise. Pretty normal stuff. It’s made even worse if I need to grab my head together and get going.

Instead, I always have my thing ready to on the side before bed. Then, I wake up, roll out of bed and get dressed immediately.

The best bit is once I've put my workout gear on, I’m so much more likely to do the exercise I was planning on doing.

I can literally count on 1 hand how many times I've got my gym gear on and then not gone to the gym!

It takes less than 5 minutes before I go to bed. Easy!

🗓 Number 4 - Block Out 1 Hour For Lunch In Your Calendar

This one takes about 10 seconds, and it gives me at least 5 hours back per week.

I block out 1 hour in my day for lunch and this lets my colleagues know not to put any meetings there.

I mentioned this in my video on How to work from home well and I think it’s a great habit/tip.

It sounds weird to say that taking an hour lunch is a habit but most of us don't do it, and we end up eating lunch in front of a monitor or in a meeting.

Now I always have it blocked out, I can go and do some exercise, or walk Benji.

📝 Number 5 - Write a to do list when you finish your work day

This is a simple one. When I finish work, I always write my to do list ready for when I start the next day.

This way, the first thing I do the following morning is open up my note book and I’m ready to go.

This is a great habit for 2 reasons:

  1. It means that I can unload anything swimming around in my brain, so that I can switch off from work and enjoy my evening

  2. It sets me up in a great way for the following day, because I can get started straight away and not have to worry about remembering what I needed to do in the morning

There we go - 5 habits that I do that have a great effect on my life.

Thanks! 😎

I think you should share things online if it can help or entertain at least one other person. If that’s you - consider sharing this with a friend 🤝

How am I 1% better this week? 📈

I have done some form of running every day this week and stuck to my original goal of running everyday (so far). I'm pleased because I'm not so great at sticking to promises I make myself when it comes to exercise!

What have I learned this week? 🤔

If you don't ask, you don't get

This Week’s Recommendation 🔝

📽 YouTube Channel - The Humble Penny - a great channel I’ve been watching for advice about personal finance. Great place to start. Shout out to Ken!

This Week I’m: ⬇️

  • Reading 📚 - I've actually just this moment finished The Shortest History of Europe - John Hirst which I have to say is a phenomenal little book. Incredibly interesting and does a great job of weaving about 2300 years into a coherent chain of events. Genuinely a fascinating book and it is, as promised, pretty short.

  • Listening to 🎧 - The Football Ramble (I’ve mentioned this podcast before but I’m repeating myself as it’s been a great companion whilst I’ve been running every day this moth)

  • Learning 🤔- About the impact of the Greeks and Romans on European history (from the Shortest History of Europe) and how they were essentially forgotten about until the Romantic / Renaissance periods

  • Visiting 🏖 - Camber Sands - Benjis first trip to the beach

  • Working on 👨🏻‍💻 - A new video about things I’ve enjoyed in May

  • Looking forward to 🎤- Music festivals

This Week’s Quote 💬

It is quite relaxing being humble, because it means you can stop feeling pressured to have a view about everything, and stop feeling you must be ready to defend your views all the time. Factfulness - Hans Rosling

This Week’s Video 📺

As promised, here's my video on the above 5 habits. Enjoy!

There we have it!

Looking forward to catching up next week.

In the meantime, find me on Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, and have a look at what I’m reading on Goodreads. Ciao!
