07 | 👖 My favourite chinos

I’m Jake - you’re getting this email because you signed up to my weekly email about becoming a better person and enjoying life as much as possible.

Yo team,

Yesterday I turned 26, so I'm sure you can understand why my email is coming over today instead of yesterday. All forgiven?

Don’t forget to subscribe!

Over the last year or so, I've slowly reduced the amount of things - mainly clothes - that I've been buying.

Everyone likes buying new shit. But, that feeling of excitement you get when you buy a new piece of clothing ends up replacing the feeling of satisfaction from feeling good in something you already own.

I have a pair of chinos that I wear whenever I can. I had the length reduced, but overtime they shrunk - luckily when they were tailored, the excess length was just sewed up, rather than cut off. So, I was able to unpick the stitching and voila - an extra inch added back on, and a perfect fit. Then, on my first day back to the office, they ripped on the inside leg. I had them repaired and they are back to their best.

Mend, don’t end (high 5 if you get the reference)

The point of this story about my favourite chinos is that instead of buying a new pair, it's been much more satisfying to alter and fix the ones I already have. I enjoy wearing them and I get satisfaction knowing we've had a bit of a journey together. Over time they'll probably fade, and I look forward to dying them back to navy.

So, what's my point? We buy new stuff because it's fun to do so - that's okay. But, this feeling shouldn't replace the fun of owning something that you can come back to time and time again. Something that you know looks good and suits you.

I can't say I don't buy stuff I don't need - I'm not quite there yet. But I am really attracted to the idea of owning a smaller amount of things. Each of which mean a lot to me. Over the next few months I'm going to be donating/throwing away a lot of the useless crap I own. Alongside clothes I don't need or wear, I'll also start with the several 'drawers of shame' I have.

You know what they are. Do you really need 3 travel adapters?

Thanks! 😎

I think you should share things online if it can help or entertain at least one other person. If that’s you - consider sharing this with a friend 🤝

How am I 1% better this week? 📈

I forgot about 2 refunds I sent all the way back in December and finally drummed up the energy to chase them down. Less than half an hour's work and £60 back in refunds. Not too bad.

What have I learned this week? 🤔

If a job takes less than 5 mins, do it now.

This Week’s Recommendation 🔝

Brand 👕 - Colorful Standard

Owning less means wearing clothes that all work together. Colourful Standard is my go to brand for basics - well fitted, good quality, minimal clothes that look great and last.

This Week I’m: ⬇️

  • Listening to 🎧 - Fred Again's Rinse FM sets. Can't wait to see this man live.

  • Visiting 🚶🏻- Newquay, Cornwall next week with Mills 🤩

  • Working on ✏️ - A new video - 5 habits for a better life. Keep an eye out!

  • Thinking about 💭 - My Kindle Paperwhite video has just reached north of 1000 views. Amazing!

This Week’s Quote 💬

Clichés go in one ear and out the other like water off a duck’s back. - Derren Brown

This Week’s Video 📺

This is a new type of video I'll be doing each month - they are fun and easy to do, and it's a good way for me to keep up with my goal of 1 video a week.

There we have it!

Looking forward to catching up next week.

In the meantime, find me on Twitter, Instagram and YouTube, and have a look at what I’m reading on Goodreads. Ciao!
