I’m Jake - you’re getting this email because you signed up to my weekly email about becoming a better person and enjoying life as much as possible.
Yo!
The main reason I want to share these emails is to share my journey to be a better person and enjoy life as much as possible. So, a big part of this is self-improvement. Hopefully, they might help you too.
This interest has developed over the last few years. It's definitely intensified during lockdown and I've made lots of changes to my life as a result. Some elements have stuck - saving money well (obviously lockdown has helped), nighttime routines, nutrition. Other areas still need work - motivation, productivity, confidence.
Making improvements has been much easier when they are broken down into small changes. Making sure not to sleep with my phone next to me at night. Tracking my nutrition using MyFitnessPal. Developing a running habit. I love finding small little habits like these that have a huge effect in the long run.
For example, by sleeping without my phone next to me, I:
Don't scroll social media in bed at night
I read before I go to sleep
I wake up and get straight out of bed, instead of scroll through my emails etc
A small habit, amounting to a big change in my sleep amount and quality - and therefore health and happiness. This is the idea behind atomic habits.
📈 +1% (Atomic Habits)
1*1.01³⁶⁵=37.8
If you improve by just 1% everyday for 365 days in a year, you'll be 38 times better than when you started.
+ now equals ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
When you see it like that, it's shows how much of a difference you can make over a year, and let's face it - 1% a day isn't hard. I like to think that a 1% difference could be getting up to go for a run when I didn't feel like it, or learning a new recipe.
As I said, I love the idea of small changes having a massive effect over time, so this will keep popping up in my emails.
I heard about these ideas from James Clear’s Atomic Habits. An absolute must read, even if you’re perfect.
Thanks for reading! We're growing 😎
If you’re new here - thanks for joining ✌🏻
I think you should share things online if it can help or entertain at least one other person. If that’s you - consider sharing this with a friend 🤝
How am I 1% better today? 📈
I'm showing up for the 3rd week in a row to write this email and share some of my thoughts. I'm loving it so far and I hope that it's as enjoyable to read as it is to write 👍🏼
What have I learned this week? 🤔
As a Man City fan I've learned first hand that football fans are customers in the club owner's eyes. Hopefully the backlash over the last few days will be enough to bring some real change into English football - not least for ridiculously high wages better rights for fans.
This Week’s Recommendation 🔝
YouTube 🎥 - Never Too Small
This is a channel I came across a few months ago. It's all about turning tiny spaces into functional and aesthetically pleasing homes. Some of the transformations are brilliant - this one is my favourite. Best bit - the videos are only 6/7mins long, so a great option if you need a break to chill.
This Week I’m: ⬇️
📚 Reading - The Athletic's coverage of the rise and fall of the European Super League. I subscribed to their service about a year ago. I think tabloid journalism is sensationalist/shite and doesn't come even close to The Athletic in terms of insight and in-depth journalism. This is their latest on the end of the ESL.
🎧 Listening to - Dave - *Titanium.* As short as it is sweet.
🚶🏻Visiting - The office today for the first time in months. Looking forward to a nice change of scenery.
😁 Looking forward to - My new 5aside league started yesterday. There's 2 new teams this season and one is called FC Pensioners, so I'm looking forward to seeing if they live up to the name (I'm sure they'll smash us)
This Week’s Quote 💬
You should be far more concerned with your current trajectory than with your current results. —Atomic Habits - James Clear
This Week’s Video 📺
I've been dabbling in making videos, here's one attempt I made about one of my favourite things on Earth - my Kindle. Have a watch! Leave a mean comment!
There we have it!
Looking forward to catching up next week.
